Towards smart biomanufacturing | advanced measurements, big data and digital twins

Industry 4.0 is about smart manufacturing, also and especially in biomanufacturing. Smart manufacturing relies on the ability to collect and interpret large data sets.
Some of the key technologies that can potentially contribute to gathering more informative process data are therefore highlighted. The latter includes advanced measurement technology, but also software tools for interpretation of the data. Furthermore, we demonstrate how novel measurements can be used in the implementation of more advanced monitoring and control strategies. Finally, opportunities offered by digital twins are discussed, and the use of big data generators – for example using a digital shadow of an existing process – is illustrated for education and training purposes.
